Usk Bridge Newport

Usk Bridge, Newport

This striking bridge provides an important link between Newport’s commercial centre and residential areas and the rugby ground.

The bridge crosses the River Usk on the site of former docks and the competition winning design by Grimshaw Architects resembling a crane reflects the site’s former use. The steel structure has the majority of its foundations on the west bank, where the ground conditions are more favourable and are also remote from residential buildings. Tuned mass dampers were installed to ensure that the bridge does not vibrate under the action of pedestrian or wind load. The structural steelwork was manufactured and installed by a major local fabricator.
